Running on Hope and $300 a Week: Jamie’s Solo Fight for Enigma's Animals
Jamie is the director of The Moooody Farm Animal Rescue (yes, that’s four ‘o’s!). She is also Animal Control Services for the City of Enigma Animal Services in rural South Georgia.
Since November 2025, they have been one and the same. That is when the city donated its chain-link kennels and Animal Control truck to Jamie and agreed to pay her $300/week to run Animal Control. That $300 covers everything – her salary, the dogs, gas, insurance, whatever is necessary.
The directive is to house animals for their legal stray hold (five days) and then euthanize them. They don’t give her the money to pay for the euthanasia drugs, but that’s okay because, for the most part, Jamie doesn’t follow that directive. Instead, if she believes she can find a home for the dog, she transfers the dog to her rescue’s care and does just that.
Six of the city’s outdoor kennels were moved to her farm from the site of the city pound. The pound was out in the middle of nowhere, with no staff and no security cameras. In fact, at one point, some local kids let all the dogs loose.
Jamie hopes to move the remaining six kennels to her house and is raising money to prepare the site for them. Puppies and small dogs are housed in a portable building. At present, Jamie has 19 dogs (including mom and ten 2-week-old puppies). In 2025, she handled 130 animals through the rescue, only euthanizing 2 for medical/behavioral reasons. In 2026, Jamie has already saved over 100 dogs.
Jamie has limited access to spay/neuter resources or veterinary care, which are challenges all over this part of Georgia but seem even harder in Enigma.
The week of our visit, she was expecting true cold weather to come. She planned to move the three young dogs into her tiny building, but would have to make a hard decision about the large male pit bull who had never lived indoors. There is no room to house him, so without rescue, she will be out of options. These dogs belong to the city of Enigma and have already long-passed their stray hold.
Jamie had no volunteers and just a few fosters working with her. She handles every animal control call for the city and does the care, cleaning, and enrichment, plus finds adopters or rescue help. In addition, she has to raise money or secure donations for all the food, supplies, and medical care the animals need.
Handling so much solo is a recipe for struggle. While Jamie strikes me as a determined person, without resources and support, this will be an uphill battle. I hope the taxpayers of Enigma will step up and demand more from their government.
Animal care and control succeeds when it is viewed as a public service and given the resources it needs to truly serve the public. And when that doesn’t happen, a community stepping in to help can make all the difference. I hope the city of Enigma steps in on the side of the animals and this woman, who is firmly on their side.
